History

The PAULINE WELLS LEWIS LEGACY CHOIR bears the name of the esteemed Pauline Wells Lewis known to gospel music fans as Aunt Pauline or the Godmother of Gospel music during her career as a radio host and gospel singer. The Choir was officially formed under the leadership of the late Dr. Irvin Hall.

Mrs. Lewis was a people person and instrumental in having young gospel singer’s music played on the radio. Because of her influence, big name gospel recording acts, such as Mahalia Jackson, the Harmonizing Four, the Roberta Martin singers and the Rev. James Cleveland and his singers came to her church to perform. The untiring labor of love of this faithful woman of God led Dr. Hall to call on Choir directors, Choirs, Pastors, musicians, and churches in Baltimore together as a benefit to raise funds to create the waxed figure of the late Aunt Pauline Wells Lewis. The Figure has been on display at the National Great Blacks and Wax Museum located at 1601-03 E. North Avenue, Baltimore Maryland 21213.

From this benefit gathering those participating agreed that this fellowship choir should continue and minister through song. In 2002 the name of the choir officially became THE PAULINE WELLS LEWIS LEGACY MASS CHOIR. DR. HALL continued to direct the choir up until his passing in January 2019. Members of the Choir continued to carry the Legacy and in April 2019 Elder Craig Fowler became the new Director. Under the direction of ELDER FOWLER developed a new vision for the CHOIR to take them to the next level in music ministry.

Listening to the voice of God and because of his obedience and Spiritual guidance from Pastors as well as several mainstream artists in the industry.  Elder Fowler and those that remained faithful to the ministry in November 2020 recorded their first single Lord Keep Me Day By Day, which is still their signature song. Elder Fowler and the Pauline Wells Lewis Legacy Choir hold fast to God’s unchanging hand as God continues to order their steps to minister the word of God through song both locally and throughout the country.
